Garstang-based wakeboarder 23-year-old Becky Hall has revealed her plans for one final tilt at international glory this season.
Over the past five years former Kirkham Grammar School pupil Becky has enjoyed an incredible rise up the ranks, including international honours. Becky boarded for the 'Mini Northern Monkeys' North West team, who won each of the national 'Live 2 Ride' events in 2007. She also won the Ladies 'Ride N' Slide' event and finished second in the national championships.
However a freak metatarsal injury in August 2008 put paid to her championship aspirations that year. But her recovery over one and a half years, including treatment from the England and Manchester United team podiatrist, has seen her emerge re-vitalised and determined to make the most of her now-or-never challenge for international glory.
Becky said, "Not everyone gets the opportunity to be the best in the world at something. But with wakeboarding I have that chance. There are about 20 or so professional wakeboarders in the world. And if I win more competitions then I hope that my professional chance will follow.
"Last year was a disaster for me. It was an innocuous injury - a tiny bone break which effectively wrote off the season. But, for me, it's all about how I respond. I still have the hunger and love the sport. I love being out there on the water. And I'm optimistic that this will be my best year."
Becky is entered in qualifying event in London on June 12th with the aim gaining a place which would enable her to compete in the World Wakeboard association (WWA) Wakestock in July in Abersoch. If those competitions go according to plan then Becky may consider a professional contract wake-boarding in America.
And now a timely sponsorship boost from Preston-based car dealership Bowker MINI, has breathed new life into Becky's world title challenge. This is the fifth successive year that Bowker MINI has supported Becky.
For Bowker MINI Tony Dillon said, "We are proud to sponsor Becky again. It's rare that a local car dealership gets the opportunity to support a sports woman of Becky's international standing. She's a local girl. And we think it would be wonderful for the North West sporting community if she could recapture the success she was enjoying before her unfortunate injury last year."
Becky adds, "It's an expensive business - expensive in time as well as cash. The time isn't a problem personally because I love every second I'm on the water. But it needs understanding employers. Then there's travel, equipment, accommodation - it all adds up. I'm lucky to have local sponsors like Bowker Mini who can help meet some of the expenditure."
