Snap the accelerator and hear the crackle and pop of the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch sports exhaust...It’s beautifully bold. We knew it had to be something special to carry the tag of “the fastest MINI ever”, and the reality is exactly that. The John Cooper Works team have utilised their rich racing history to come up with a car you won’t forget in a hurry. Let’s take a closer look at the particulars of MINIs hottest ever hatch.
Cooper S with a body kit? Not even close. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine is based on the Cooper S engine that received such great acclaim with its release in 2014 but the magicians at BMW UK have crammed in an extra 42bhp. The 231bhp engine gets you from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds (with powershift auto model). 50-75mph in fifth gear will take 5.6 seconds, an arbitrary fact until you compare that with the Porsche 911 Carerra S time of 5.9 seconds.
The power behind the accelerator is instantly noticeable with a storming 320Nm of torque, giving you the opportunity to execute the perfect overtake in almost any gear you choose. There is the feel of this car being just that little more “hardcore” and it will certainly turn heads. A cacophony of noises emerge from the all new sports exhaust system, all of them being a wonderful reminder of the power you possess behind your right foot. Multi storey car parks and tunnels become amphitheatres, and you won’t be able to resist driving with all of the windows down.
The new aerodynamic body kit starts with a redesigned front bumper, while the enlarged lower air intake keeps the thunderous engine cool. At the other end, a specially designed rear spoiler helps keep the rubber on the road as you chew up the tarmac.
Speaking of the rubber, it also gets a helping hand from the new independent multi-link suspension which keeps the rear wheels glued to the road – even under the hardest of braking and cornering.
Getting into the more sensible bits, the economy figures come in at a very respectable 49.6 mpg and 133g/km of C02 in the automatic gearbox and 42.2 mpg whith 155g/km in the manual version.
The interior is a sight to behold and an incredibly pleasant place to be. The distinctive MINI has a familiar feel, with a few bespoke features unique to the JCW variant. Only in the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch will you see gear and rev counts alongside essential stats like speed, navigation and warnings on the optional MINI Head-Up Display. Giving you that feeling of having something special. The figure hugging, part alcantara, part leather bucket seats will ease you in and out of even the tightest of corners.
